HYBRID
BICYCLES
|
|
Hybrids or cross cycles, are probably the most popular type of bike sold in the cycle market at present. They are called "hybrid", because they are a combination of road racing bikes and mountain bikes (mtbs). They try to combine the best elements of each type. |
They have the larger (and faster) 700c size of wheel as seen on racing bikes, but they have wider rims to take fatter, more comfortable tyres. They don't come with drop handlebars, but instead have straight bars (like mtbs), which give a more upright riding position and provide extra stability. The brake levers and gear levers are, literally, to hand, giving the rider a feeling of security.

"I have had my Velocity for almost a year now and it's been superb. I cycle to the train and then at the other end and it deals with commuting with ease. Without reservation would recommmend this bike to any adult commuter." |
quotes from the Ridgeback website
"Just bought a Ridgeback SuperNova, after having my Velocity stolen and wanting a step up in components - What a fast attractive bike, over the moon with it. I was very happy with the Velocity, but this is something else! Commuting has become such a joy, and I never thought I'd say that." |

Hybrid
bikes come in variations. Some are speed machines, with
compact, lightweight rigid frames. Others are designed for
comfort riding and come with suspension forks and seatposts
and have more relaxed frame angles. |
Some hybrids come fitted with mudguards and pannier carriers (although, quite often, these need to be purchased as extras). Hybrids (like all other types of bicycles) range from budget machines, usually made from hi-tensile steel frames and low-end components to high-performance lightweight cycles with aluminium frames and finely engineered components. Prices range from £150 to £1,000 or more. |
If you are looking for a high-end hybrid with top-notch parts, then look at GENESIS

Dawes Cycles have been making hybrids for many years, including the well known DISCOVERY range. They also have a selection of bikes that come complete with mudguards, a carrier and full chainguard, like the Kalahari, pictured right.
